Baby squirrel(s) born this Sunday morning in SquirrelNest 9! We are yet to identify the mother and the number of babies, but we are very happy to welcome them to our new SquirrelNest 9. Will be streamed here https://www.youtube.com/live/wd3LARNX... This nestbox was used by Spotted Twinkie until she got worried about the furniture and moved to Nest 1. Yes, Nest 1 was the nest of Rose, Hana’s daughter, and Rose tried to get it back but Twinkie was absolutely determined to make it her home. This new occupant in Nest 9 appeared just days ago, and she started nesting actively yesterday, ahead of the coldest day in weeks (we had snow yesterday!). We can see one baby when mother takes a quick breath of fresh air. There may be more under the nesting material. It is not typical for squirrels to have just one baby but it happens. May be she’s a first time mother? She does look young. But she knows how to hide her baby with bedding when she leaves the nest for longer that just a tunnel visit.

​ We belong to Washington DC area, home to 6 species of squirrels. We’ve never seen DelMarVa fox squirrels or North American red squirrels.  Flying squirrels occasionally show up at night but they don’t live in our boxes.  Eastern chipmunks visit our feeders https://youtu.be/JnF21apH13s and sometimes nestboxes from March to November. Woodchuck used to live under our shed but unfortunately it left before we started streaming 🤷🏼‍♂️ But we have all kinds of Eastern Grays: melanistic (black), gray, gray-brown and even blond ones!

Hello squirrel lovers!  Hana's babies have names now: Boy: Buddy “Pushy” Holly Girl 1: Cinnamon “Twitchy” Sakura Girl 2: Rose “Stretchy” Biscuit We've learned a couple important things from you: 1) Buddy was a very good squirrel and a good friend to many people over years. He was also known under other names of Wili or Vili and had a sister named Hazel. 2) Not many squirrels are called Pushy , Twitchy and Stretchy (also  Shovey ! from Erin ** , Scamper , and Fuzzy ), but they should be 3) Hana is a beautiful squirrel mother, bringing calm and joy to many viewers. Some even think that she's an antidepressant (we agree)  4) Nut names ( Hazel, Peanut & Cashew ) make great names for squirrels 5) There's a lot of symbolism going on for our babies: from Wood* ***: Since they were born on July 25, Leo is the fifth sign of the zodiac (July 22 to August 23), and it's represented by the lion.
